A new evolution in my natural hair journey

"wash and go" fail saved by a puff:)

I have been protective styling my hair since I went natural. In fact, 99% of the time, my hair is in some form of protective styles. To be quite honest, I am getting bored and tired of the same styles. Although, I am grateful for the wonderful results I got from using protective styles, I am ready to try new things with my hair.

A lot of people swear by protective styling as an aid to to reach desired length, some others still retain length without protective styling. I believe that any style you choose to adorn your hair with is fine as long as you are protective of your hair. In essence, I am saying that, the way you handle your hair is what matters the most (provided you are not using damaging products in your hair, that's for another post). There were times I lost hair while I was trying to install protective styles and take them out (mini twists).

Well, I believe that I am moving into a new evolution in my natural hair journey, away from the restriction of the cycle of  protective styling, which I sometimes do not feel sexy wearing, into styles that will allow me to be creative and enjoy my hair. I have been quite boring with my hair and am ready to be  more creative in terms of styling my hair. To be honest, my hair was much thinner, and I could hardly do anything creative with it. My hair is  fuller now( I am a henna head:) and I think I can come up with different styles besides mini twists and braids.

This is a new adventure for me but I am excited about exploring different styling options with my hair.

I will also do more frequent updates with my hair as I embark on this new journey

  1. According to Audrey's book "The science of black hair" creative styling is not always about cornrows and braiding, but mainly how you handle your hair. In other words, how you protect your hair, like you mentioned. I just personally like keeping my hair in twists and other protective styles as it is the most convinient. I only have to spend few hours putting the style in, and I don't have to restyle every night and day if my hair was out.
I wish you all the best on the new phase of your hair journey

Protective styling is just convenient for now, since I have to leave home 5.30am every morning

  3. I too feel like I've progress to a different place in my hair journey. Nothing wrong with wearing your hair out. It's spring and you don't need to protect your hair as you did before.

    1. Thanks sis. I forgot to mention that I will still be doing some protective styles, it's just not going to be mini twists, braids, cornrows and flat-twists. Thanks so much for your support:)
