What do you think about Silicones in hair products?

When I first went natural in 2007, I immediately acquired the information about avoiding products with "cones" as they are said to cause build up. Recently I tried using certain products (Aveeda Remedy Conditioner and Herbal Essence Hello Hydration) that have silicones in them and I have to say that my hair loved the products. Those really smoothed my cuticles and kept frizzes at bay. I do not use shampoos with sulfates and I still have not noticed any product build up in my hair from using those silicone containing products. This journey has been very interesting. I keep learning to get off those bandwagons and try different things on my hair and see what my hair loves.

Here is an interesting article on Silicones

  1. I personally do not have a beef with silicones.  The only reason why I stopped using them was because of misinformation.  Dermatologists recommend them so they can't be bad for the hair.  You just have to know how to use them properly.  The problem comes when people pile silicone on top of silicone and low/no poo or don't wash their hair for months.  If you incorectly use anything, you are going to have a problem.  Shoot, if you drink to much water it can kill you.  Silicones are okay in my book.
