Growth and Length Retaining Series 2:Prolonging the Anagen Phase

In the last post of these series, the basic structure of hair and the three phases that Hair go through were discussed.

The Anagen/Growth phase, which lasts from 2 to 6 yrs depending on the individual, can actually be prolonged!!!  If you have noticed that your hair grows to a certain length and then stops at that length all the time, it is because your growing phase is a certain length of time. This is predetermined by genetics. So in each individual, the anagen phase determines the maximum length an individual can grow on their head.

How the Anagen Phase can be prolonged:
MSM ( Methylsulfonylmethane): is a naturally occurring form of sulfur found in many foods.MSM is known to naturally increase the length of your hair’s growing phase and allow your hair to grow much longer before entering the resting and shedding phases. For example if your growing phase lasts for only two years and since normal growth rate is at 1/2 inch per month, after your two years of growing phase, you will have 12 inches of hair that will now be entering the resting phase for shedding. However, if you are using a supplement containing MSM, your hair will attain even more length (more than 12 inches of hair) before entering the resting and shedding phases. So you get to keep longer hair strands for a longer period of time.

Other benefits of MSM:

MSM is also believed to be useful in strengthening joints, balancing blood flow as it helps in increasing the blood flow, muscle contraction problem and mobility related problems etc.

Food Sources of MSM:
MSM is available in small quantities in almost all the vegetables, fruits and grains, garlic, soybeans, and eggs. Although "conventional processing and cooking methods significantly decrease the effectiveness of MSM from foods."
