Coilybella Project 365 # 73:Hibiscus can improve the overall health of your hair

In Ayurveda, Hibiscus  is known as one of the best secrets to beautiful and healthy hair. Hibiscus promotes hair growth, stops hair breakage, gives hair a healthy luster with bounce, and delays premature graying. Hibiscus has been a wonderful ingredient in hair treatments that combine other ayurvedic herbs such as alma, marshmallow roots and brahmi. For henna color treatments, hibiscus is used to achieve a burgundy to black cherry color on hair. It is also slightly acidic and helps to aid in a faster henna dye release.  Hibiscus powder can be used  as a hair tea rinse or used in your daily moisturizing spritz.

Here is a recipe I am using and loving to moisturize my hair
1.25 cups of water
1/3 cup of Aloe Vera Gel
3 tablespoons of Hibiscus Powder

Boil water and add Hibiscus . Let the mixture steep for as long as you want. Strain the liquid with  cheesecloth. Then add aloe vera gel to the strained liquid. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and moisturize your hair as needed. Store the mixture in the refrigerator for a week. The pH of this mixture is exactly 4.0 which is close to the pH of hair and helping the hair to retain moisture better.

I have to say that my hair is visibly thicker and  stronger. This is going to be a staple in my regimen. I also use Hibiscus, combined with other ayurvedic herbs in my deep treatments, which I will be sharing in a future post.

What about you? HAVE YOU USED ANY AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS IN YOU HAIR, IF SO HOW DO YOU USE IT AND WHAT BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM IT?

  1. In fact I have...I used them for quite some time. And, Hibiscus happened to be one of my favorites, I ve used in as a spritz with Aloe juice, as a herbal wash, in my oils, and even as a facial rinse. I have however, stopped using a lot of herbs in my rinses because I've found the Ph levels were not where I would have liked them to be for my hair ( trying to keep my hair products closer to the hairs pH, that seems to work much better for my hair). Although I've found adding a bit of Aloe juice can make a big difference. I've have however continued to take a break from using herbs in my hair, just to see if I see a huuuuge difference. So far so good. Thanks for posting Tinuke. Hibiscus is a great herb! take care.

  2. I completely understand where you are coming from Ms Zainab, that's why I use aloe vera gel or juice. These help lower the pH. I updated my post and included the pH of the mix, which is 4.0
